Dr. Sharon R. Bloch, Professor of Science, loves talking about the relationship between science and faith. “There is a common misconception that science and religion are in conflict, that one must choose between believing what scientists say or believing in God. But that’s like asking if you walk to school or take your lunch. When I study science, I see how God designed everything to work according to its purpose. Science and faith provide two different views of the same picture, and in order to see the whole picture you need both. Science by itself can tell us a lot about ‘how’ things work, but that’s only half the story. Studying the Bible gives us the ‘why.’ I love teaching at LCU because I get to talk about both.”
“There are scientific questions and there are non-scientific questions, and scientists need to respect their limitations The question, “Is there a god?”—that’s not a scientific question. That’s not a question where you can do an experiment and get a definitive answer. I make a big point of distinguishing between what’s scientific and what’s not scientific. Is a painting beautiful? That’s not a scientific question.”
