What if I told you that the things that matter most in life are loving God and loving your neighbor? Hopefully that wouldn’t surprise you. But what if I told you that you could actually make loving God and loving your neighbor the centerpiece of a career? What if you were actually allowed, and even encouraged, to study and live out things like compassion, friendship, community, discipleship, and guidance – all as a part of your college education? And what if I were to tell you that those who have taken this path are today ministering to broken families, discipling unruly teenagers, teaching hungry adults, and reaching out to their communities through social justice, church planting, coaching, mentoring, leading creative arts ministries, and facilitating small groups, all for the love of God and neighbor? Well, that is exactly what is happening here at Lincoln Christian University with the BA in Spiritual Formation & Ministry Degree, and I’m inviting you to become a part of it!
The BA in Spiritual Formation & Ministry begins with a rigorous 30-hour ministry core that introduces students to big picture concepts and foundational ministry skills. Students then complete 15 additional hours on spiritual formation topics. While we don’t train students for everything they’ll do in their careers, the driving force remains our conviction that, while all students need at least some training in spiritual formation (call it “Getting Real with God”), some students need a whole lot of it! People are so hungry for God. This is why a growing number of churches are now hiring ministers of Spiritual formation. Things like spiritual growth, friendship and guidance, ministry to people on the ropes (immigrants, refugees, victims of trafficking, etc.), and just knowing how to pray, meditate on Scripture, and go deeper with God – that’s what we do in this program, and it’s what more and more churches are coming to realize they need.
