Pearl Willis, LCC ’06-’12, founder and director of Roseland Community “Good News” Care in Chicago, IL.
Roseland Community “Good News” Care was established in 1994 to provide quality CHRIST Centered Child Care in a nurturing environment for high school, college, and low income working moms. The day care has often been called the “no-excuse day care” because we provide diapers, milk, food, and clothing for our children, giving our moms no-excuse. We now have an after school program too. Our moms are asked to sign an agreement to attend Bible Study. During these classes we teach abstinence, parenting, and nutrition. They also have an opportunity to open up and share what is on their hearts.
Our moms are as young as thirteen. Tammy shared her story of being raped at the age of thirteen on her way home from the library. She hid her pregnancy for five months before telling her mom. At the age of fourteen, Tammy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and named her Julia. Tammy’s mom said, “We found this day care on the internet because I had to go to work and my daughter had to go back to school. Tammy has been part of the day care for 4 years now. She will be eighteen this year and she is an “A” student. GOD has a plan for Tammy and her daughter, Julia.
Since opening our doors, 46 moms have graduated from high school, 26 have graduated from college, and 19 have completed vocational training programs. These programs include Certified Nursing Assistant/phlebotomist and cosmetology school.
