Northampton Christian Church (NhCC) in Hampton, VA is seeking a Senior Minister to lead them into their next season of ministry and beyond. NhCC, an independent, non-denominational congregation, is an offspring of the Restoration Movement. Established in May 1962 as a daughter plant of another local congregation, NhCC is debt-free, owning a building with an auditorium seating approximately 300 attendees, two other large rooms, and a suite of classrooms and offices. Additionally, the church has a large garage, a picnic shelter, and another independent building for gatherings and workshops complete with restrooms and a fully equipped kitchen.
The buildings are located on approximately 5 acres in the Northampton region of the city at 1409 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA 23666. When COVID-19 restrictions were enacted by state guidelines, the average attendance for Sunday morning worship service was around 100. After spending the spring and summer doing live streaming, drive-in church, and service under the picnic shelter, the church returned inside the building on Oct. 11, 2020 with plans to maintain live streaming indefinitely.
Rich in history with small-town charm, Hampton has been recognized by Money magazine as one of the best places to live, as well as a national model for youth development and civic engagement. Starting in 2016 and for three years in a row, Hampton has been ranked as one of the 25 most affordable beach towns in America. Hampton is also home to Langley Air Force Base and NASA Langley Research Center an aviation and space research and development center, the setting of the movie “Hidden Figures” and the center where the astronauts were first trained.
In 2017 Hampton/Newport News the median household income was $52K and the median house value was $189K with median rentals about $1000 per month. Demographics for the two cities show an almost even split between black (44%) and white (41%) with a small percentage of Hispanic (8%) and other ethnic groups. Religious affiliation in the area is low as well, with only 42% of the population declaring an association. In total, the Peninsula has approximately 500,000 residents with over 13,000 businesses, two additional major military installations, and various National Park Service sites.
NhCC was established as the neighborhood was in development. As a result, the Northampton congregation grew quickly and established itself. The church has enjoyed seasons with over 300 attendees and planted a daughter congregation in 1980. Today, there is again plenty of opportunity. The adjacent neighborhoods primarily contain single-family houses, many families with children, and many two-parent households. The demographics also indicate the majority of the neighbors around the church property have no religious affiliation.
The church appears to be well-regarded in the local community with a history of hosting outreach events, heavily attended fall festivals, and other similar activities. At the City’s invitation, we are Community Partners with Forrest Elementary school directly across the street. The church has also been conducting a food pantry for a number of years for the community.
Even as we continue to adjust to new societal norms and responses to things such as the COVID-19 experience, giving has remained strong. NhCC also has a very rich history of giving and sponsoring missions from in-state to international. The congregation is the primary sponsor for a missionary family serving eastern Europe.
