For Jeremy Ward, an employee at one of New York’s premiere department stores, the road to prosperity is proving to be elusive. It’s Christmas 1941, and people are heading into the shopping season with a renewed sense of optimism. The nation is climbing out of the Great Depression as President Roosevelt praises the American people for “turning the corner on the road to prosperity.” For Jeremy, however, optimism quickly turns to cynicism when store management determines to maximize profits by cutting commissions, and encouraging employees to “sell customers things they never knew they wanted, with money they never knew they had.” As Jeremy resigns himself to the fact that his efforts to get ahead are doomed to become nothing more than the proverbial “one step forward, and two steps back,” a chance encounter with a crusty old street vendor leads him down a different path.
