LCU Baseball Wins Season Opener in St. Louis

Baseball Team 2013

The Lincoln Christian University (LCU) baseball team traveled to Sauget, IL, on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, to play St. Louis Christian College (SLCC) at GCS Ballpark in their season-opening doubleheader.

LCU was able to win both games with a score of 6-3 in the first game and 10-1 in the second.

LCU (2-0) started out hot in the first game, scoring four runs in the first inning.  SLCC (0-2) responded by scoring three of their own runs off of two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a hit.  After the first inning, LCU starting pitcher Justin Walen (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville High) calmed down and threw a complete game, giving up just two hits and not allowing any more runs.  LCU was able to tally their last two runs with one each in the third and fourth innings.  LCU led SLCC in total hits 11-2.

In the second game, LCU again jumped out in the first inning, scoring three runs.  SLCC responded in the bottom half of the inning, with one run.  The rest of the game was all LCU as they went on to tally up three more runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning.  LCU had a large advantage in total hits once again as starting pitcher Micah Wolfe (Matoon, IL/Univ. NW Ohio) held SLCC to three total hits compared LCU’s 15.

LCU starting pitchers, Walen and Wolfe, received the two wins for the day as they both pitched complete games.  Walen threw for seven strikeouts while also going 3-7 from the plate.  Wolfe threw for eight strikeouts while going 3-9 from the plate and three stolen bases.  At the plate, LCU was led by sophomore Joey Burge (Lincoln, IL/John Wood CC) who went 6-9 with three RBI’s.  On the day, LCU had six different players with three or more hits.  For SLCC, freshman Keith Hodges (Defiance, MO) led the way from the plate, going 2-6 between the two games.
