
The Lincoln Christian University men’s and women’s basketball teams won both games in St. Louis, MO, on Thursday, February 7, 2013 where they took on St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP).
LCU Men Reverse the Outcome
The last time these teams met, STLCOP (7-13) beat LCU (10-13) 59-46 in a defensive battle. Thursday’s night game proved to be much different as LCU came out on top, 84 – 74.
Two players stepped up to lead the Red Lions to a victory. As LCU was struggling to score in the first five minutes of the game, junior forward Raymond Shegogg (Sun River Terrace, IL/Lincoln College) began attacking on offense with an array of three-pointers and driving layups. Shegogg scored 15 of LCU’s first 18 points of the game within a span of eight minutes. LCU ended the first half with a 32-27 lead. In the second half, it was senior captain and shooting guard Brady Cremeens (Hopedale, IL/Olympia High) who led the offensive attack. Cremeens hit eight straight three-point field goals to lead LCU to a 16-point lead with nine minutes left. STLCOP responded, bringing the lead back to within seven points. After calling timeout, LCU regained their commanding lead and despite a small run towards the end of the game from STLCOP, LCU won by 10 points, thanks in large part to freshman guard, Anthony Rush (Peoria, IL/Illinois Central College) who knocked down 5 of 6 free throws.
Cremeens tied his career high game as he led LCU with 37 points on 11-23 shooting, including 8-14 from beyond the three-point arc and 7-7 from the foul line. Shegogg followed Cremeens with 19 points on 8-13 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Rush also chipped in 10 points and four assists, including going 6-8 from the foul line. For STLCOP, Clayton Earhart (Steelville, MO) led the team with 23 points on 9-16 shooting and Shawn Menckowski (Christopher, IL) chipped in 18 points on 6-20 shooting. STLCOP forward Gozie Uzenda (St. Louis, MO) recorded the game’s only double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Women Take Down St. Louis
In the first meeting of the season, LCU (8-9) was able to pull out a four-point win over STLCOP. They improved on that winThursday night, as LCU beat STLCOP (2-15), 65 – 53.
The first half was a close game. LCU went into halftime with just a five-point lead, 32-27. In the second half LCU as they pulled away a little bit at a time. The Red Lions eventually extended their lead and won the second half by seven points, giving them the 12-point win on the night. Surprisingly, STLCOP out-rebounded LCU, 57-48 on the game. However, LCU forced STLCOP into committing 24 turnovers through the game. LCU also held STLCOP to 1-11 shooting from the three point arc. LCU was able to get to the free-throw line 25 times throughout the night, knocking down 14 of those chances for the advantage, compared to STLCOP going 4-9 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore shooting guard Tatiana Colclasure (Effingham, IL/Effingham High) led LCU for the game with 20 points on 8-23 shooting, 10 steals, and eight rebounds (two rebounds shy of a triple-double). Junior guard Moriah Kirkpatrick (Mt. Vernon, IL/Mt. Vernon Township High) recorded 18 points on 7-17 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior guard Brooklyn Cunningham (Owosso, MI/Owosso High) recorded nine points for the game while grabbing 10 rebounds. For STLCOP, Heather Cohen (Deerfield, IL) led the team with 19 points on 9-16 shooting and seven rebounds, while Jaime Everett (Cassville, MO) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
